The sculptor behind Teresa vs. Priscilla, Ban vs. King. Naruto vs. Pain, and Alucard & Richter Belmont returns to lend his talents to Escanor vs. Estarossa! We caught up with Carlos Cruz to bring you this exclusive interview about how he brought the epic battle into the third dimension!
How is this piece compatible with Ban vs. King? What elements did you consider to ensure there was visual cohesion between the two statues?
The manga style of Seven Deadly Sins has a particular way of displaying the characters. They feel dynamic and explosive, but at the same time very stylized, so I tried to respect the proportions on both statues, making them as close as possible to their source in order to give that sense of a vital moment.
Tell us one thing about the sculpting stage of this statue that someone. May not know simply by looking at it?
I love the details of the melting pieces of armor on the floor as they add the sense of heat coming from Escanor’s Cruel Sun. I love adding elements that the viewer perceives (but that can’t literally be felt emanating from the statue) as heat, cold, speed, or force.
What element of Escanor vs. Estarossa’s sculpt are you most proud of?
I feel like I nailed the style and personality of both characters, especially Escanor. He is one of my favorite characters as he is highly sturdy and cocky, and exceptionally resilient. I hope the collectors feel the same way.
What was the biggest challenge in sculpting Escanor vs. Estarossa?
The base with the sun and darkness circling around it was very challenging, as making all those swirls and fire details was very time-consuming. In the end, they came out very nicely.
Escanor is a very recognizable and popular character. What would you say makes his design unique from an artist’s perspective?
I think his clothing and overall proportions are very important, and he is powerful in the anime, so it is always “hype” to see him fighting powerful enemies. At the same time, his mustache gives him an intellectual look.
